The Issue
Mary Sacred Heart of the Native American Advocate group has asked for help in doing "battle again with KY and the DOT" concerning a road widening project that is to go through a Woodlands Indian site. "The Advocate monitored this site for over a year, and was to be notified when excavating was to start. We were not! as usual."
March 27th, 2001, The Bowling Green, Kentucky Daily News published a story on construction on a portion of U.S. 231 in Warren County having been halted while state archaeologists determined if prehistoric Indian artifacts remained at the site. The report speaks of massive looting of artifacts, "as many as 10 cars were parked there, with people working from sun up to sundown (removing artifacts)." The Kentucky Heritage Council identified the site as not a significant one years ago, but according to current information from what they've been able to "glean about what was found at the site", they now say the site should have been labeled as signficant. Now what will be conducted is a salvage operation with excavation, cataloguing and findings curated by one of the state's regional museums.

There is also the article Illegal excavations reports will be investigated in which Warren County Attorney, Mike Caudill, states that he is offering a "forgiveness" period for dozens of people (some say possibly as many as 200) involved with illegal excavation who are willing to turn in property they've found and make themselves available to an archaeologist to show where and at what depth the artifacts were found.

Archaeologists Leaving Town
Heath Myrick
In March, several artifacts were found along U.S. 231 in Warren County.
Archaeologists from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet seized the area looking for any additional relics.
A majority of the artifacts had already been picked and taken to the Warren County attorney's office.
Archaeologists plan to analyze the artifacts and work up an exhibit for this year's Kentucky State Fair.
Work at the site has not hampered construction on U.S. 231.
