The Issue
The article, Traveler's Rest Historic House Museum: Will The Ancestors Ever Know Rest?, by Michael Sims, is at Dickshovel.com. Traveler's Rest is a now-historic residence for Judge John Overton (an associate of Andrew Jackson) that was built over a 500 year old town burial mound in the late 1700s. Because of the number of skulls that were there, Overton even named the site Golgotha, Hill of Skulls. There has been much looting and desecration at the site over the years. With the recent preparation to build an interpretive site, other graves were discovered. Traveler's House did not follow proper procedure after the discovery and on November 12, 1995 Alliance members demonstrated outside the entrance to Traveler's Rest, protesting the desecration of the graves. Despite receiving support from the public and from those who viewed TV news reports or read newspaper articles, excavations continued.
Burial remains have already been excavated at Traveler's Rest, what they're having problems with is getting the archaeological field notes. This article makes for some very interesting reading concerning Tennessee law and prehistoric Indian graves.
