FLORIDA AIM CONDEMNS MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD PLAN FOR SNAKE CREEK INDIAN CEMETARY

The American Indian Movement of Florida (Florida AIM) has been monitoring the situation involving the Miami-Dade School Board's gaffe at the purchase of a property with known Indigenous cemetaries within it. Florida AIM South Florida members and support group members have been monitoring the Carol City site.

Florida AIM learned today that the Miami-Dade County School Board is considering converting the property into a parking lot for its school buses. The American Indian Movement of Florida will not tolerate such a repugnant desecration of an Indigenous cemetary. We suspect the Miami-Dade County School Board would not dare consider such a proposal for any non-Indian cemetary, nor would someone turn the grave of the unknown soldier or any of their ancestors into a parking lot for school buses.

Florida AIM demands the Indigenous cemetary at the site be given the respect it is due. We will tolerate nothing less.

From FL AIM

Greetings:

Nearly twenty members of the American Indian Movement of Florida and the Florida AIM Support Groups spent several hours cleaning up an Indigenous cemetery where the former Sandman Nursery is located in Carol City, FL.

The Mothers Day Indigenous cemetery clean-up was done after Florida AIM learned about the site owned by the Miami-Dade County School District, is being considered for a school bus parking lot. The School District claims they bought the property without knowing the site included an Tequesta cemetery on it.

The Miami-Dade School District refused to cooperate with Florida AIM's request for access to the site. The site was locked, AIM members and supporters simply circumvented the lock and filled 15 trash bags, as well as removed some larger material from the site placing it in front of the gate for removal. Local residents noted the school board had mowed the property the day before and sent in work crews to clean up some of the refuse the day before as well.

AIM members and supporters also leafletted neighbors to build support to make the property a passive park.
