New land acquired for Angel Mounds might contain ancient Indian sites

New land the state has bought to expand the Angel Mounds State Historic Site could contain more ancient American Indian sites.
The 98 acres will be explored possibly by Indiana University graduate students in hopes of finding more about the people from the Middle Mississippian culture who inhabited the area from 1100 to 1450 A.D.
"It's never been officially surveyed but it has a high potential of having a site or two on it," Angel Mounds Manager Mike Linderman said of the area officially purchased this week.
The land was bought from Westbrook Corp., owner of a nearby mobile home park, for $226,826, said Nick Heinzelman, of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources land acquisition office. The money came from the Indiana Heritage Trust Fund.
At one time, the area now called Angel Mounds, along the Ohio River just southeast of Evansville, was the regional hub and trading center of a large Indian community.
A new interpretive center opened at the park in September.

There is currently a boycott of Angel Mounds, especially its "Native American Days" events.
