"Northwest tribes appeal 'Kennewick Man' ruling"

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - "After a judge ruled that scientists can study an
ancient skeleton known as "Kennewick Man," four Northwest tribes have asked
an appeals court to delay any studies.
U.S. Magistrate John Jelderks ruled this month that eight anthropologists
who sued the federal government could study the bones estimated to be more
than 9,000 years old.
Jelderks last summer overturned a ruling by former Interior Secretary Bruce
Babbitt, who said the skeleton should be turned over to the Nez Perce,
Umatilla, Colville and Yakama tribes for burial without scientific study."
