FL AIM statement and more on Pompano Beach

2002 May 3 : "Ocean Boulevard opened after bones excavated"

By MITCH LIPKA

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- "Ocean Boulevard, the stretch of State Road A1A that runs through Pompano Beach, was reopened late Thursday afternoon, about 24 hours after sheriff's deputies and historic conservationists found the remains of an ancient Native American buried under the roadway, the Sheriff's Office said.

The three-lane road was closed to traffic about 9 a.m. Wednesday because investigators had to tear up the street in the 1400 block, about one mile north of Commercial Boulevard and one mile south of Atlantic.

A construction crew found the bones on Tuesday but decided to fill in the hole, pour cement over it and keep working.

Investigators spent the next day digging and sifting.

They found 24 bone fragments and 15 large pieces of bone, including a jaw with well-worn teeth indicative of an ancient Native American with a grainy diet."
