Narragansett Tribe calls for archaeological survey of park

Westerly (AP) -- Narragansett tribal officials want the town of Westerly to conduct an archaeological survey to make sure no Indian artifacts are being disturbed by a drainage project.
Members of the tribe have closely monitored the drainage work at Wilcox Park, which is slated to be complete in two weeks.
The Westerly Sun reports that Narragansett preservation officer John Brown visited the park this week.
Brown says he's worried that artifacts are being disturbed by the project. He believes the town is required to conduct a survey under the National Historic Preservation Act. The area surrounding Wilcox Park is a National Register historic district.
Town Manager Pamela Nolan said the work will continue. But authorities are checking with federal and state agencies to see if an archaelogical survey is required.
